Embracing One’s Calling

Marianne Mencias | September 9, 2019

Perhaps one of the most frustrating situations to be in is when you know your strengths and your passion but not having a clue how to pursue them.

I had this dilemma this year.

Growing up, I only had one dream – to be a teacher. I thought I had everything planned out – from what course to take up to picturing myself teaching passionately in a classroom for the next 10, 20, even 30 years! I did end up teaching in the academe for 5 years, but eventually realized that classroom teaching was (and still is) too tiring, tedious, and demanding for me. I was still passionate about education, so I decided to venture into teaching English to Koreans online. I started off as an instructor and then, in less than a year, became a trainer. I was happy because I was still teaching. However, due to various circumstances, I resigned from that job after almost 6 years. I thought closing that chapter would also mean turning my back from teaching.

During my first two months of being unemployed, I felt so lost. You see, I’ve wanted to pursue two passions which I’ve been putting aside for some time – calligraphy and writing. I could already envision myself having a stable career as a calligrapher who does not only make *beautiful* art works, but one who creates a story and has a specific purpose and message behind every artwork. However, I had a dilemma. I didn’t know how to start. On top of that, I had a lot of fears and insecurities – that I’m not good enough or creative enough. Whenever I’d weigh the pros and cons, I’d usually panic. Baby steps, I told myself. One art work a day. One reflection or content per day. And as I worked on these little steps, the dream that was planted in my heart started growing. Family and friends showed their support. I started receiving small projects and commissioned works. Nothing major yet, but all of them made me excited and made me want to improve on my craft. I did my best to take care of every client, of every art work. I also made sure to be consistent with my daily postings on social media, sharing about my faith, my personal struggles and triumphs, just my life journey in general. The number of likes doesn’t matter. “Just write something, Tina. It will reach someone who needs to read it.”

“What happened to teaching?” you may ask. See, here’s the funny thing. Last month, I helped out with Marianne’s workshop, “Marvel”. I’ve already heard about Gallup Strengths Finder from some of my friends way back, but I haven’t taken the test. Just before the workshop, I took the test myself, and the results made so much sense! One of my friends gave a comment after finding out what my Top 5 Strengths are — Teacher na teacher ah! It was like an arrow hit my heart! The educator inside me has and will always be there. A week after the event, I had a small calligraphy workshop. After months, I found myself standing in front of a small group of learners exploring calligraphy. Yes, I was nervous at first, but when I started teaching and speaking, it felt like home. Then, I knew, I would always be a teacher. The venue or means won’t matter; I’d always find a way to teach and impart knowledge.

So here’s the thing. WE ALL HAVE A UNIQUE SET OF TALENTS/STRENGTHS. It may be something that we’ve been doing for a long time, something that we’ve started before but we stopped doing, or even something we just discovered! The thing is, it would be such a shame if we do not put them to use. Remember, you don’t have to start with something big or grand. Start small. Trust the process. Do not put your talents to waste; God called all of us to do something, so OWN IT!
